Metoposcopy is one of the stranger entries in the history of divination - strange because it is also one of the most methodical. The Italian mathematician and physician Girolamo Cardano systematized it in the sixteenth century, mapping the horizontal lines of the forehead onto the seven classical planets. The result was a surprisingly coherent system that treats the face not as a canvas for reading emotions, but as a chart of planetary influence impressed on the body at birth.

What Metoposcopy Actually Is

The word comes from the Greek metopon (forehead) and skopein (to observe). Its premise: the seven planets of classical astrology - Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, the Sun, Venus, Mercury, and the Moon - each rule a horizontal zone across the brow, from the hairline down to the eyebrows. Lines appearing in those zones carry the qualities of their planetary ruler.

This is distinct from palmistry and face reading (physiognomy). Metoposcopy is not about the shape of features or the general map of the face. It looks specifically at horizontal furrows in the forehead - their depth, clarity, number, and position relative to the planetary bands. A single deep line in the Saturnine zone reads differently from three faint lines crossing through Jupiter and Mars.

The Seven Zones and What They Mean

Saturn rules the highest band, just below the hairline. Lines here speak to fate, longevity, and the weight of accumulated karma - what you carry from your lineage and what you must work through over a lifetime. A prominent Saturn line on someone young is often read as early seriousness or difficulty that eventually produces depth.

Jupiter occupies the next band and governs fortune, social standing, and the capacity to attract resources. Jupiter lines are considered fortunate when clear and unbroken.

Mars holds the third zone and reads as drive, conflict, and courage. Multiple Mars lines can indicate a combative temperament or a life marked by struggle and resilience in equal measure.

The Sun rules the center of the forehead - the fourth band. This is the zone of identity, vitality, and the relationship with authority. A clear Solar line is one of the more positive signs in the classical system.

Venus in the fifth position governs love, beauty, and the quality of relationships. Lines here that cross or break are read as complications in love life; smooth uninterrupted lines suggest easier affections.

Mercury holds the sixth zone and speaks to intellect, communication, and adaptability. Many fine lines in the Mercury band are associated with quick minds and restless energy.

The Moon rules the band just above the eyebrows, the lowest and most emotional position. Moon lines speak to the inner life, to dreams and intuition, and to the relationship with the mother.

How to Read Your Forehead

Look at your forehead in good natural light. Relax your expression - do not raise your brows or frown. Notice which horizontal lines appear most naturally, most deeply, or most persistently. Those are the active planetary zones. One zone may dominate; several may be present together.
